SUMMARY:Salt Of The Earth Celebrates 20 Years!
DESCRIPTION:A roots group with a straightforward and unassuming style\, a sound that is stripped down to it’s core\, and songs that come straight from within\, Salt of the Earth hails from St. Louis\, Missouri. This is the 20th anniversary of Salt of the Earth’s run\, one that has been marked with incredible joy and fun\, with an ever-widening circle of friends and family. \nThe members are:\nLynne Reif on vocals and rhythm guitar\nMike Schrand on bass and vocals\nJake Brookman on cello\nJim Hieger on lead acoustic guitars and banjo \nBoth Lynne and Mike have history playing and singing in the St. Louis-based Roots-Rock band Belle Starr. Jake is a classically trained cellist who has played in groups ranging from symphony orchestras to punk bands and Jim is a self-taught\, all natural lead player with performance roots in the “jam band” circle. \nSalt of the Earth features original songwriting\, which aims to chew on life in a heartfelt way\, and spans the genres of pop\, folk and blues. The group puts down rhythmic instrumental accompaniment complemented by rich melody and harmony lines. They have released 6 albums of their original tunes\, and continue to draw new audiences around St. Louis and throughout the Midwest region. SOTE has made regular appearances at the Sheldon Concert Hall\, farmer’s markets\, wineries\, eateries\, coffee houses\, and festivals. Their unique chemistry and authentic vibe reaches out to the listener and draws them in. The energy created between the audience and musicians is electric\, becoming the foundation for a genuinely organic\, acoustic sound. \nSit back and listen to the music. That’s all there is!

SUMMARY:Rum Drum Ramblers
DESCRIPTION:The backward-glancing trio Rum Drum Ramblers are most commonly thought of as a blues band\, and certainly\, the guys in this group seek to revive a certain strand of acoustic\, pre war blues music. But after listening\, one could argue that the Ramblers are a soul band; just listen for a few minutes to guitarist and singer Mat Wilson’s sweet\, husky voice and feel the easy rhythm of the best early R&B singers. Or perhaps it’s best to describe it as a country act: there’s so much twang-bangin and swift-pickin’ that Buck Owens would probably tip his ten-gallon hat to these fellows from the great beyond. But then\, terming the Rum Drum Ramblers as country (or blues or soul) would ignore the jazzy underpinnings that Joey Glynn pumps out of his sonorous upright bass. Better yet to put genre tags aside and let the Ramblers interpretation of American folk idioms fan you like a St.Louis humid breeze. —- We always look forward to the Ramblers at the Focal Point! It’s also worth mentioning that two of them were present (yet in separate acts) during our recent Tom Hall memorial party\, and they closed the night out together.

SUMMARY:Rough Shop's First Ever Xmas in July!
DESCRIPTION:FRIDAY NIGHT \n\nSATURDAY NIGHT \n\n\nYes. You read it right Xmas in JULY. Due to the unfortunate cancellation of Roughshop’s 18th annual Holiday Extravaganza in December 2022\, We’ve moved it to mid Summer of 2023! We figured that it’s such a harebrained scheme\, that it might just work. This year marks the 19th year (but 18th show) that Rough Shop will be at the Focal Point to offer up their take on the holiday season! Find out why these shows have become an annual tradition for so many. It’s all there – the wonder\, the longing\, the joy\, the beauty\, the feeling of loneliness for some\, the celebration and MANY holiday decorations. It all comes through in the original songs by Rough Shop and the wide array of Christmas and holiday songs by other artists that they select to play. And to mark this momentous occasion there will be a prize for best Xmas themed summer outfit!\nOf course\, a celebration of this scale is too immense for the five-member Rough Shop to pull off on their own\, which is why they bring in musicians and vocalists from an array of other St. Louis bands to join the Yuletide festivities! Guest musicians TBA.\nBlow molds galore! Lights aplenty! Christmas and holiday music of the highest order! Santa sanctioned! 50% of the proceeds from this weekend of concerts will go directly to keeping the Focal Point alive and presenting music!

He has released albums for Virgin\, Ace\, Trapeze\, and most recently released Flight Risk on Rollercoaster Records in 2023.\nBiographyRoy\, with schoolfriend John Renbourn\, recorded for Denny Cordell in 1970\, before the beginning of the Pub Rock scene\, where he played in bands with Charlie Sinclair – bass (Kilburn & the High Roads/The Tommy Band/Davy Jones)\, Adrian Pietryga – guitar (John Dummer Blues Band/JoAnn Kelly)\, Michael Paice – sax/harmonica (Red Beans & Rice/Dana Gillespie)\, Geraint Watkins – keyboards (Dire Straits/Bill Wyman/Fabulous Thunderbirds/Eric Clapton.)\nIn 1975\, Roy signed with Pink Floyd Music to co-write songs for the band Unicorn\, before releasing the Melody Maker-acclaimed album Immigration Declaration (with liner notes by Roy’s friend John Peel) and the single The Way You Look Tonight\, the first Virgin 45 to place on the BBC playlist.\nSince then\, he has released two albums as Klondike Pete & the Huskies – Some of the Fellers and Who Axed You. Roy returned to St. Louis in 1988\, recording two albums as Roy St. John & the Morning Show Band during his tenure as award-winning morning show host and producer. Roy was listed as one of the ‘Fifty Best Things About St. Louis’ in St. Louis Magazine; and\, with his co-host and long-time friend\, the late Otis Woodard\, played many benefits and won the Riverfront Times Best Radio Personality.\nRoy and his wife Lindsey\, returned to England in 2003\, to live and paint in the West Country.\nThey now live in St. Louis\, where Roy exhibits artwork\, plays with Rocky & the Wranglers and the duo Roy & Joe\, and has recorded three albums for Rollercoaster Records\, based in the Cotswolds of Gloucestershire. \nReviews of the record “Immigration Declaration” feat. Adrian Pietryga – guitar; Les Morgan – drums; Charlie Sinclair – bass; Michael Paice – sax\, harmonica; Roger Brown – acoustic guitar; Barry Farmer – engineer.(with guests Lindsey Scott – violin\, Harmonics; Roger Rettig – pedal steel; Bob Andrews – organ.)\n“The voice is warm\, lazy\, amiable. The album has atmosphere you could cut with a knife. Mr. St. John excels himself.”\n-Bob Edmunds New Musical Express 1976\n“… a delightfully sardonic vocal style and a flippant humour occasionally reminiscent of Randy Newman. There are\, too\, overtones of Robbie Robertson\, most significantly on California Migrant\, a highly inventive account of migrant workers in America. It’s already a personal favourite.”\n-Allan Jones Melody Maker 1976.
